How many questions do you have for August cover star Olivia Rodrigo? Vogue came up with 73 of them on a recent trip to the 20-year-old singer-songwriter’s house—which, of course, began with Rodrigo pulling up in her car. (What else would you expect from the voice and mind behind “Driver’s License”?) After proffering matcha, she rates her current happiness on a scale of one to 10—eight, not bad—and clues Vogue in to her New Year’s resolution: to spend more time alone. Love that for her!
For anyone hoping to hear an early demo of “Good 4 U” recorded in Rodrigo’s room, you’re in luck; she cues that up on her phone before discussing which celebrity she’d like to meet (Robert De Niro, hit her up), her favorite road trip destination (Salt Lake City), and a bespoke book recommendation (poetry by Patti Smith, personally inscribed by Smith herself; what better gift could there be for a young musician?). Her favorite Lorde song is “Liability,” her favorite Alanis Morissette song is “Not the Doctor,” and she declines to name her favorite of her own songs—but she will name the album she’s listened to most in her life (Elephant by the White Stripes, if you’re curious).
Before long, it’s time for a piano jam session and a discussion of Rodrigo’s favorite bad habit (listening to true-crime podcasts at home alone at night...yikes!). She then whips out homemade banana bread while rhapsodizing about McDonald’s oatmeal and the Neapolitan shake from In-N-Out (respect), and sheds a little light on the dress she’s wearing—which she recently picked up at Chloe Sevigny’s sample sale.
