When it comes to identifying the latest trends, there are plenty of places to look—runways, street style, and our favorite celebs provide plenty of ideas. For a more unexpected source of inspiration, might we suggest taking a peek at your grocery store’s produce aisle? We’re only kidding…sort of! Fall’s newest It color does seem to be plucked off a plate: it’s avocado green. Whichever way you slice it, it’s likely that inspiration for this color did not actually come from the world of food. Avocado green has a distinct Prada energy, where it was masterfully paired with a poppy shade of pink on fall runways. We’ve also been seeing it in the autumnal collections of Toteme, Loewe, and Bottega Veneta—and most recently, in the new winter collection from The Row. All signs that the verdant shade is here to stay.

While avocado green (not olive, not pistachio!) might seem intimidating to style at first glance, it actually pairs quite well with many of our favorite fall trends, like chocolate brown, rugged suede jackets, and even burgundy. For an explainer on how to incorporate the shade into your fall look, check out our styling guide below.
The Sweater
An avocado green sweater is an unexpected ally for a sleek winter-white mix. Add depth to the look by pairing it with an oversized brown blazer and heavy black accessories.
The Skirt
Schoolgirl classics, like a boxy blazer, a white button-up, and chunky Mary Janes take on a new energy when worn with a contrasting green midi skirt.
The Bag
Pairing avocado and burgundy may seem counterintuitive at first, but the shades actually really compliment each other. Keep the rest of the look neutral to let the color and texture combination shine.
The Jacket
Green and pink feel more Prada than Lilly Pulitzer when the shades are just off enough. You’ll want to choose a green with a bit more brown in it, like this jacket from Staud. A thin pearl necklace and black pleated skirt completes the runway-coded look.
The Dress
An avocado maxidress can be the star of the show when paired with chic monochromatic extras like a black overcoat and white ballerinas.
The Shoe
Add zest to a gray-on-gray skirt set by stepping into a pair of avocado flats, bonus points for a pair white socks, which add even more contrast.
