The skin on the décolleté is subject to early signs of aging, as it’s thinner and has fewer oil glands than the skin on the face. And while an ounce of prevention (i.e., sunscreen) is worth a pound of cure here, the best neck creams “can make a big difference over time,” says Noah Gratch, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York and Long Island.
“Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to the neck every single morning is the most important step in slowing collagen breakdown,” he continues. “When wrinkles are already present, I usually combine at-home and in-office strategies.”
Depending on the patient and how deep their neck lines are, Dr. Gratch recommends anything from fractional laser resurfacing to ultrasound-based tightening treatments or Sculptura injections in the office, paired with a home routine that includes retinoids, peptides, and hydrating creams.
“Using a neck cream can help maintain the skin’s suppleness and complement professional treatments,” he explains. “I often tell my patients that a high-quality cream on the neck is not about overnight results but about consistency and supporting the skin long-term.” Which neck creams are the most supportive?

Best Defining the Jawline: Valmont V-Lift Neck
- Why we love it: Suited for all skin types, Valmont’s cushiony cream targets wrinkled, crepey skin on the neck and chest; it also gives the face a more contoured look by firming the jawline. The Swiss cream features Valmont’s Triple DNA and RNA, a signature ingredient that combines salmon DNA, which can retain 10,000 times its weight in water, with liposomal RNA that supports the skin’s natural reparative processes. It’s also formulated with vitamin C, peptides, and copper lysinate. “The Valmont V-Lift Neck Cream contains some intriguing ingredients, such as DNA fragments and RNA particles, but the real effects likely come from its film-forming polymers that provide a temporary tightening and lifting sensation,” says Kseniya Kobets, MD, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore-Einstein Advanced Care in New York. “Its moisturizing components—humectants like glycerin and urea—combined with emollients such as shea butter and petrolatum, help soften the skin and maintain hydration through occlusion.” The peptides in the formula may support collagen production over time, she adds, while the antioxidants contribute to overall skin health. For more pronounced lifting and firming, the brand recommends using the cream as part of a four-step process: Before or after using V-Lift Neck on the décolleté and jawline, apply V-Lift Serum, V-Lift Cream, and V-Lift Eye on the face.
- Ingredients: Triple DNA RNA, peptides, vitamin C, shea butter, grape seed oil, copper lysinate
- Who it’s for: Those looking to tighten, firm, and tone the neck, smooth the décolleté, and contour the face

Everything You Need to Know
What is a neck cream?
“Neck cream is a moisturizer that is formulated to address skin concerns of the neck. These are usually crepiness, sagging, lines—including ‘tech neck’ lines—and wrinkles,” says Engelman.
What causes neck wrinkles?
The neck is notoriously quick to show signs of aging, and biology bears at least some of the blame. “Neck skin is thinner than facial skin and remains exposed to the same environmental stressors, like UV light and pollution,” says Libby. “Neck skin also has a lower oil gland composition than facial skin, and thus produces less of the necessary oils to keep the skin barrier well moisturized.”
Plus, the latest gadgets don’t help the quest for crease-free necks. “This generational focus on constant tech use has increased downward motions [of the neck,]” Libby says. “These downward motions physically cause creasing, which is not doing any favors for an area of the body that has thinner skin to begin with.”
Why does the skin around the neck and décolletage age more rapidly?
Not only is neck skin prone to aging in general; it’s likely to sag and wrinkle fast. “Because there is naturally less collagen in the neck due to the thinness of the dermis in that area, the neck is particularly prone to premature aging,” Engelman says.
“This is also an area that is highly exposed to the sun and the elements, which contributes to more rapid aging.” Then, of course, there’s human error. “Oftentimes, the neck is a place that people forget or neglect when applying serums, moisturizers, or sunscreen,” says Engelman. “I always remind my patients that skin doesn t just stop below the jawline.” Lucky, a well-formulated neck cream can swoop in to save the area from neglect, and offer a range of benefits beyond that.
Do neck creams actually work?
According to Kristina Collins, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon in Austin, Texas, neck creams do work—assuming you swipe them on with realistic expectations. “Neck creams can improve hydration, skin texture, and the appearance of fine lines, but they won t produce facelift-level results,” she says. However, she says that consistent use of a well-formulated neck cream can make a visible difference over time, particularly when it’s combined with sun protection.
What to Look for in a Neck Cream
“The skin on the neck is thinner and more prone to sagging due to fewer oil glands and frequent movement, but targeted ingredients can help maintain firmness and elasticity,” Dr. Collins says. When choosing a neck cream, she specifically recommends looking for ingredients—including those listed below—that support collagen production, improve hydration, and protect against environmental damage.
- Peptides: “These amino-acid chains signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, helping to improve firmness and reduce fine lines over time,” Dr. Collins says.
- Retinol: Collins calls this vitamin A derivative “A gold-standard ingredient for boosting cell turnover and stimulating collagen production,” and notes that it helps smooth wrinkles and improve skin texture.
- Ceramides: “These lipid molecules strengthen the skin barrier, preventing moisture loss and keeping the delicate neck area hydrated and resilient,” Collins says.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Dr. Collins says that this humectant, which helps the skin attract and retain moisture, plumps up the skin on the neck to reduce crepiness.
- Niacinamide: A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide helps improve skin elasticity, reduce redness, and support an even skin tone, Dr. Collins says.
- Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): Dr. Collins recommends CoQ10 to fortify the delicate neck skin with antioxidant protection. “The ingredient helps defend against environmental stressors while supporting collagen production,” she says. The result? “Firmer, more youthful-looking skin.”
- Vitamin C: Another powerful antioxidant, vitamin C protects the skin from free radicals and UV light, helps fade dark spots, and can also be instrumental in skin tightening. “I have used vitamin C in my clinic for years to help with elasticity and tighten the skin around the neck and décolletage,” celebrity esthetician Kate Somerville previously told Vogue.
The Best Way to Apply Neck Cream
Neck creams can be used day and night, with an emphasis on SPF-infused creams in the morning. “Apply the cream in a gentle upwards motion to not tug downwards on the skin,” says Libby. “As mentioned, the skin of the neck is very thin so it’s important to treat this area with care,” Engelman cautions. “Tugging or pulling on the skin can exacerbate its lines and crepiness.”
What are the best ways to prevent neck wrinkles?
Preventing neck wrinkles is a holistic affair. Below, Dr. Collins breaks down her top tips—from the best skin-care ingredients to use to the best posture to adopt—for keeping the neck smooth and supple.
- Daily Sunscreen: “UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown and skin laxity,” Dr. Collins says. “Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on the neck every morning, even if you’re indoors near windows.”
- Moisturize: “Hydrated skin is more resilient,” she says. “Look for moisturizers with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin to plump and protect the skin barrier.”
- Topical Antioxidants: Dr. Collins recommends using vitamin C and other antioxidants to help neutralize free radicals and prevent wrinkles caused by sun-induced damage.
- Retinoids/Retinol: “Regular use of retinoids boosts collagen production and improves skin texture,” Dr. Collins says. “Start with a low-strength retinol to avoid irritation, and apply gradually.”
- Mind Your Posture: Constantly looking down at phones or laptops can deepen horizontal lines, Dr. Collins says. “Position devices at eye level whenever possible.”
- Healthy Lifestyle Habits: To support skin health from within, Dr. Collins says to avoid smoking, get adequate sleep, and stick to a balanced diet that’s rich in antioxidants and omega-3s.
What do dermatologists recommend for neck wrinkles?
To treat active neck wrinkles, Dr. Collins suggests “neck-specific skincare,” such as the creams listed in this edit, and prescription retinoids like tretinoin. “They are more potent than over-the-counter retinol options and can significantly improve fine lines and texture,” she says. Certain professional treatments, such as those listed below, can also help diminish the appearance of neck wrinkles.
- Professional Chemical Peels: “Mild peels with glycolic or lactic acid help exfoliate and stimulate new collagen over time,” Dr. Collins says.
- Laser Treatments: Fractional or non-ablative lasers resurface the skin, which promotes collagen remodeling for smoother, firmer skin, she says.
- Radiofrequency Ultrasound Devices: “Non-invasive procedures like Ultherapy or RF microneedling can tighten and lift the neck by stimulating deep collagen production,” Dr. Collins shares.
- Injectables: Neuromodulators like Botox can soften dynamic bands, Dr. Collins says, while hyaluronic acid fillers can improve volume and smooth creases.
- Collagen-Stimulating Treatments: As another option, Dr. Collins notes biostimulatory injectables like Sculptra can gradually boost collagen for long-term improvement.
