Celine has cancelled its menswear show that was scheduled to take place on Sunday 2 July at Paris cultural centre La Gaité Lyrique, on the eve of couture week, amid ongoing protests in the city.
Celine creative director Hedi Slimane announced the decision on Instagram: “Having to abruptly cancel a show that represents a considerable amount of work for the fashion house, my teams and the workshops is a great disappointment. It’s also a disappointment for all our guests, journalists, artists and musicians, to whom I extend my warmest and most affectionate thanks. Their safety is naturally a priority for us, and the uncertain evolution of these extremely serious disorders requires us all to exercise the utmost discernment. From my point of view alone, a fashion show in Paris at a time when France and its capital are bereaved and bruised seems inconsiderate and totally out of place.”
Protests broke out in France following the police killing of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk in Nanterre, a Western suburb of Paris, on 27 June. Four nights of protests followed in Paris and in cities across the country. France’s interior ministry said Saturday that overnight violence was beginning to wane.
Courrèges also postponed its annual summer party slated to take place in Romainville outside Paris on Saturday “due to the recent tragedy in France”. A cocktail event for a Chloe exhibition opening on Friday evening was cancelled. Meanwhile, two other ready-to-wear shows on the eve of couture will so far go on as planned. The Patou show, slated to take place 2 July at Espace Wagram at 6 pm, will go ahead with reinforced security. The Alaïa show is still to be held on a Paris bridge at 8 pm the same night.
Paris Couture Week is slated to run from 3 to 6 July. A spokesperson from the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) said Saturday that there has been no indication from Paris police to cancel the event, and it will go ahead as planned unless that guidance changes.
