“A million girls would kill for that job…” Hosting the CFDA Fashion Awards, that is. Anne Hathaway has been announced as the new host for the evening, taking over from Sarah Jessica Parker who has dropped out due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
“The CFDA is thrilled that Anne, a native New Yorker and a performer with extensive experience in theater and film, has agreed to host the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards presented by Amazon Fashion,” said CFDA CEO Steven Kolb. “We are looking forward to her bringing her infectious energy and charm to the CFDA stage on November 6th.”
Hathaway will also be presenting the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award alongside designer Narciso Rodriguez. She is joined as a presenter by Mary J. Blige, who will introduce a special hip-hop tribute film by the legendary music video director Hype Williams, and by Demi Moore, who will present Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop with the Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion. Additionally, the American Accessory Designer of the Year will be presented by Ayo Edebiri and Prabal Gurung, while Charles Melton and Zac Posen will announce the Shop with Google American Emerging Designer of the Year winner. Naomi Watts will present Alina Cho with the Media Award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard, and the Past Lives actor Greta Lee will give Jonathan Anderson his International Designer of the Year Award.
The Awards, which will take place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, will also honor Serena Williams with the Fashion Icon award, the presenter of which is yet to be announced. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve used fashion as an outlet to express myself,” said Williams in a statement. “I have had so much fun learning my style and allowing it to change as my life has evolved, but I’ve always held one thing true—fashion is for everyone, no matter your size, race, or income. I am incredibly honored to be receiving the prestigious Fashion Icon award from the CFDA, an organization whose work I have long admired and to stand among style icons I have always looked up to.”
As for the nominees, the CFDA announced a well-rounded group of designers earlier this year. “This year’s nominees and honorees are diverse, creative, and entrepreneurial, and each, in their own way, is reshaping the present and future of our industry and the global fashion landscape,” said Kolb. The list of nominees includes a wide range of industry stalwarts and buzzy emerging talents: Tory Burch, who’s been expanding her design vocabulary of late, has been recognized with a nomination for American Designer of the Year, and Stuart Vevers, who celebrated his 10th anniversary at Coach in September, is nominated for Accessories Designer of the Year, while Connor McKnight and Rachel Scott of Diotima are first-time nominees for Emerging Designer of the Year. Raul Lopez of Luar, who closed New York Fashion Week with a knockout show in Brooklyn, is nominated for both Womenswear Designer of the Year and Accessories Designer of the Year, the latter of which he won last year.
Designer and former Vogue editor Vera Wang is being recognized with the Board of Directors’ Tribute for her impact on the bridal category, while Maria Cornejo, who is celebrating 25 years in business this year, will receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by Laura Linney. The Founder’s Award in honor of Eleanor Lambert is going to Domenico De Sole, the former Gucci Group (now Kering) CEO and Tom Ford International chairman, while the Environmental Sustainability Award will be presented to designer Mara Hoffman.
