Awards season is typically an easy fashion lift for Hollywood’s leading men. All male actors have to do for the red carpet is put on a good suit that fits right, and they’re golden. Sure, the details like the shoes and jewelry also matter—but at the end of the day, their wardrobe choices are less-involved than their female counterparts (and they are also less-dissected by fashion fans, too).
Given this year’s shows are mostly virtual, however, we expected male stars to ditch their suits all together in favor of more casual looks. A sleek sweater or crisp shirt could easily look appropriate for a Zoomed-in appearance. But if tonight’s Critics Choice Awards are any indication, it’s clear that men are still itching to dress up: This evening, the men brought their fashion A-game, and actually totally saved the night. Like the female actors in attendance, they brought excitement, experimentation, and mega fun to the soirée.
A big theme of the night was doing modern, updated takes on suiting. John Boyega, who won best actor in a TV movie or miniseries for Small Axe, sported a total Louis Vuitton look from its fall 2021 collection that included a crisp white suit and a monogrammed black-and-white shawl, worn cross-body. Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy wore a Dior military-style jacket with hefty combat boots, while Leslie Odom Jr., in Celine, switched up a white collar shirt for one with a ruffled neckline instead, and it gave his gray suit a fresh feel.
Bold color was also present throughout the evening. Canadian actor Eli Goree wore a bright red Etro suit, while actor Algee Smith also did pink Versace tailoring, his blazer even embellished with a sequin starfish (why not!). It’s clear that this year’s all-bets-are-off awards season is causing a red carpet menswear revolution—and thank god for that. Let s hope it keeps going up until the Oscars.
