British designer Daniel W Fletcher is departing Italian label Fiorucci, four years after he was drafted in to reboot its menswear offering.
“I will be leaving the brand at the end of this month after completing my final collection,” Fletcher said in a statement on Monday. “I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together during my time here, and have had so much fun along the way.” Fiorucci confirmed the news and said Fletcher’s tenure as artistic director for menswear came to a “mutual and amicable” end. A successor has not been announced.
Fiorucci was founded in 1967 in Milan by Italian designer Elio Fiorucci and became a celebrity favourite with flagship stores in Milan, New York and London. However, in the mid-late 1990s the brand collapsed into administration. It was acquired by Japanese denim company Edwin and then British designers Stephen and Janie Schaffer, who relaunched it in 2017. Since then the brand has been attempting to regain momentum and gain popularity among young consumers.
The Schaffers enlisted Fletcher — a Central Saint Martins graduate and recent LVMH Prize nominee — in 2019 to strengthen Fiorucci’s menswear offer and bring buzz back to the business. Womenswear, meanwhile, is led by the brand s design team. Under his direction, Fiorucci has introduced new categories such as knitwear. His final collection for Fiorucci will be resort 2024.
Fletcher continued to operate his eponymous brand while holding the role at Fiorucci. On Friday, he unveiled his Autumn/Winter 2023 collection, created in partnership with Savile Row tailor Huntsman, off-schedule during the June edition of London Fashion Week.
