Sometimes, for one reason or another, we continue to date someone even though we know it’s not working, and even though we suspect that it’s never really going to work—no matter how much you may want it to. You did your best, really, you did! You sat through the Blue Collar Comedy Tour and endless not-great movies, you ate beige-looking Chinese takeout and you were really very generous with the not-charming company of those fraternity brothers. But much like how you switched out of once-beloved lacquered pink platforms for more sensible penny loafers, or relegated striped gauchos to the bottom drawer, only to put on a pair of very faded and less eyebrow-raising skinny jeans, this just doesn t feel like progress. Really, why do you even want to be with somebody who is preventing you from wearing fun shoes and trendy pants? You don’t.
So what’s the solution? Make a decision, get out while you can, and dress like there’s no coming back (because there isn’t). Wear those pink platforms! Slip on those striped gauchos! In fact, wear everything you want, loud and proud. “This is the time to dress however you please and let loose,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. “Feel free to go full-on ‘man repeller’ and embrace your newfound freedom.” First step: Find your footing in your newly freed-up weekends in a pair of sky-high decorated heels and a crystal-slathered minidress. For those “I am woman, hear me roar” moments? There’s pink for that: a bubblegum pink leather biker jacket that is as feminine as it is tough—as well as a lace-trimmed bra for a touch of allure. At the end of the day, you’ll move onto bigger and better things while looking great—and like yourself.
