Sir Elton John is a musical legend, but it’s his theatrical stage style that has made him an icon. Over the years, the rocket man has performed in a number of extremely bold (and often sequined!) getups. Many of these flamboyants looks, it turns out, were designed by Versace (which is a match made in heaven, considering that the Italian fashion house is also known for its fabulous prints and bright colors). And now we have an even closer look at John’s personal archive of Versace pieces, as the star is auctioning off his wardrobe in a new Christie’s auction.
Titled The Collection of Sir Elton John: Elton’s Versace, the singer’s archival Versace sale opens on February 9, and will run until February 27. It’s part of the larger Goodbye Peachtree Road auction that Christie’s is doing next month, in which John will be auctioning off pieces from his Atlanta home on Peachtree Road (also in the auction are personal photos, home furnishings, and jewelry). But it’s his Versace auction that I’m particularly interested in here: It’s basically my dream sample sale, filled with tons of vintage Versace finds. (Though don’t expect a deal: Many pieces have opening bids starting in the thousands.)
The Versace auction includes 73 lots that include a range of pieces, including Versace’s silk shirts, metallic coats, chainmail tops, and of course, some chunky gold chain jewelry. I’m currently having heart palpations over the groups of silk shirts featuring graphic prints from the ’90s. Ditto for the silver chainmail shirt from 1996, which is very Dua Lipa. Hell, I’m even interested in the Versace furniture (yes, really)—why not outfit my home with a pair of Louis XVI–style chairs and Versace glassware? The only thing better than drinking a martini out of a Versace glass, though, would be if Elton and Donatella Versace joined me for a toast.
