If you thought the only thing special about today is that it is the start of spring, well, you are sorely mistaken. Today is also something called National Proposal Day, which means we should all brace ourselves for our social media feeds to be hijacked by pearly white grins; giddy, tear-stained cheeks; and endless, endless close-ups on diamond-laden left hands. In the age of all things Internet, even intimate moments like a marriage proposal have become a flash mob–frenzy type of ordeal, and with jumbotron-style broadcasts for proposals, we learn everything about the couple—Instagram accounts like @HowHeAsked come with entire courtships condensed into comment-sized captions, and a search for #SheSaidYes is guaranteed to bring up a bevy of personal stories—including exactly what the ring recipient was wearing for the very special, very sharable moment.
So, how to dress for your technically unofficial engagement announcement? "The rest of the engagement aesthetic is rooted in the design of the ring,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. If it’s a heart-shaped stone, try a pink pump, a wedding-white skirt, and a crop top—all adorned with bows. But if it’s a larger-than-life diamond, opt for a minimalist look—perhaps a sleek silk slip dress, or coordinate a yellow diamond’s hue with a sunny frock and gilded flats. But one last thing—do try to get a manicure. You’d be shocked at how many people are going to suddenly be very interested in your hands.
