European Elections, united we vote: photographs to activate voters and create change

For the upcoming European Elections, the project ‘Walking Home’ gathers 27 photographers, one for every voting country, to inspire people to exercise their democratic duty, promoting unity and collective values.

"Beyond differences and geographical boundaries, there lies a common interest.” These are the words of Jean Monnet, considered one of the founders of the European Union. They now resonate on the eve of the elections for the European Parliament, taking place 6-9 June 2024, and gain even more significance when accompanied by Walking Home, the project created by the German photographer Clara Nebeling.

Nebeling united 27 photographers to inspire people to vote and be active citizens. Each one of the photographers, one from every EU country participating in the elections, offers a photograph that best represents the values of Europe. These photographs will be used to create your personal, customised poster: in addition to the 27 different pictures, you can choose the languages and colours you prefer to spread the word and create collective awareness.

Voting is both a right and a duty, and in this ambivalence, we can glimpse the complexity of the system we are part of as citizens, in which we should invest our hopes for a better, united Europe. To vote is to speak up for your beliefs, your projects, and your dreams for the future. We asked some of the 27 participants to tell us three things they wish to see in Europe.

1. I would like to see people that are engaged in politics not just as a one-off vote but actually prioritizing things that are vital to our existence, such as community, nature, and freedom.

2. Rampant individualism everywhere leads to the slow disappearance of community values, as we become more and more disoriented during late capitalism. I would like to see this phenomenon eliminated.

3. Lastly, I would like Europeans to deeply reflect on their past and present and how their actions have impacted the world. Admitting the historical impact they have had on the world, both in terms of colonialism and environmental destruction, as well as addressing the ongoing humanitarian crises for what they are and far from political agendas.
