Ciara manifested her latest campaign with Gap x LoveShackFancy. When she was picking up her daughter, Sienna, from school, she got the call. Her son, Future, had already done a campaign with Gap years ago, when he was just three years old. “I was looking at my daughter and I said, ‘I really would love to have you in a Gap campaign,’” she tells us by phone. “The craziest thing about timing was that I was speaking it into the universe: I got the phone call.”

It’s the first time Ciara has ever done a fashion campaign with her kids, and the imagery, shot by Zoey Grossman, represents a celebration of the two brands coming together for one explosive collaboration. Think: an expansive limited-edition, a multi-category capsule collection of women’s, men’s, kids, and baby apparel and accessories, with the iconoclastic look of Gap tied up neatly with a proverbial huge, pink LoveShackFancy bow encompassing an ultra-feminine, flowery aesthetic. The 76-piece collection covers everything from classic denim to chunky sweatshirts, with prices ranging from $13 to $248.

Personal style is one thing the singer, businesswoman, model, actress, and verified fashion tastemaker hoped the collection would represent, especially since she herself has developed a distinct look all her own. Take, for instance, when she wore the extreme avant-garde label Noir Kei Ninomiya at Paris Fashion Week this spring. “My personal style is always tomboy chic,” she says. “I m always gonna be a tomboy for life, that is what it is. I m really into oversized fashion. I m a little obsessed with Japanese-inspired fashion as well. I ve been having fun challenging myself and creating unique silhouettes with oversized pieces and still trying to find a way to make it sexy at the same time.”

Ciara has also watched as each of her kids has developed their unique sense of fashion lately. “I really love seeing my kids make their own fashion choices, even if it looks like, ‘what combination is that?’” she says. “They are expressing their personalities through what they wear. That s what fashion is. I think that kids are empowered through knowing that they put their looks together.” She describes Future as having rockstar energy: “He loves combining different colors together, but he ll find a really cool way to put different patterns together and make it funky.” As for Sienna? “She s kind of a tomboy like mommy, maybe a bit more girly than I am. She always goes, ‘Mom, why do you always put me in black?’” she says with a laugh. “She prefers to add color and she definitely has a bit more of a feminine side to her.” Ciara saw the photoshoot as an opportunity to showcase a side of family fun, too. “It represents family and all those good things,” she says. “Normally, Future s the one that when the cameras come on, he s like, ‘Let s go. I m ready,’” she says, with a laugh. “But he was more shy. I was like, ‘who is this kid?’”

One surefire thing about the collection? It’s all about nostalgia, with that classic all-American feel twisted with a new hint of cozy, girlishness courtesy of LoveShackFancy. So much so, that even Ciara couldn’t help but think back to her days of shopping at Gap as a young child. “I remember, I was a little girl, going in the store to shop, you know, looking,” she says. “Then, obviously, as you get older, you get to understand things from a creative perspective, thinking about all the iconic, creative ideas that Gap has had over the years, or creative campaigns and imagery,” she says. In case you’re wondering if she has an all-time favorite Gap wardrobe staple, she does: the classic jean jacket. “That silhouette never gets old. Pairing the classic jean jacket with jeans, that s kind of like a classic timeless staple that I think will never go out of style.” What about for the kids? “The leggings,” she says. “They do them so well.”

And as for her favorite piece from the collaboration, it has to be the dresses, and more importantly, one specific outfit that she wore in the campaign. “I m funny with dresses,” she says. “I obviously love wearing dresses when I do red carpets, but I m always trying to find some edge.” For the shoot, she wore a feminine, flouncy dress. “And we put some fun rain boots with it, then also layered it up with this cool sweatshirt around the waist.” She also wore a bow-decked LoveShackFancy dress with denim boots. “That was one of my favorite looks as well. I thought it was very unexpected. There was an attitude.”

“You can mix and match. Or you can go monochromatic because the florals are very romantic, but also bold at the same time,” she adds.
