“Although surfing has traditionally been male-dominated, this group of girls has forged strong friendships through the sport. Their camaraderie on the waves and the sand embodies female empowerment in its purest form. Capturing them in their element showcases surf culture from a vibrant female perspective. By deconstructing surf culture, often associated with aggression and competition, we see how these girls embrace both their soft, delicate, feminine qualities and the raw intensity needed to carve through the waves.”
Sam Spence is a Korean-American fashion and fine art photographer based in Los Angeles. Adopted from Korea as a baby, and raised in the Midwestern United States, Spence has always known the meaning of standing out. Frustrated by the lack of diversity and acceptance around her, Spence turned to the arts at a young age as her main form of expression. Her background as a contemporary dancer has influenced her love for capturing movement and the human body in its unique form. This, coupled with her vision of pushing beauty and fashion boundaries, has brought her to the artistry she harnesses today.
