Grace Bol is perched on a rooftop in Tribeca beneath a cherry blossom tree in full flower wearing a raw denim dress that first appeared on the Colovos Fall runway. Here, on the South Sudanese–American model, it also works as an ankle-grazing coat over a pale blue floral slip, and she spins to demonstrate its utility. “It looks like an overall, but it’s a dress,” she says. “From afar, you’d think it is a jumpsuit, but when you get close, it’s a dress and a jacket at the same time.”
It’s something Bol looks for, preferring a more versatile jacket over the typical model-off-duty skinny jean. “The length of the legs is always a problem for me,” she says, laughing. “Right now, I have long jeans with a parachute bottom—really long, which has been my dream to find. But for me, a studded jean jacket in black, I think is the best thing because it can go with any outfit”—much like the convertible Colovos piece she’s wearing now. “I could wear it with shorts or a dress or long jeans—I could throw it over anything!”
