Is there anything more satisfying than a perfect casting choice? It’s what makes a good film or television show great. I mean, would White Lotus even be what it is today without Mike White enlisting Jennifer Coolidge to steal every scene she was in? Nope! Ditto for when Winona Ryder starred in Stranger Things or when Brendan Fraser made his career comeback in The Whale—unexpected star power is one of Hollywood’s best weapons. And the good news is, just over a week into 2024, we have a lot of delightful projects to look forward to—and they seem to be campier than ever.
It’s almost like Hollywood casting executives woke up on January 1 and said, “I’m gonna give the gays everything they want this year.” Take Ryan Murphy’s buzzy Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, which centers around Truman Capote’s glamorous inner circle. Not only do we have Naomi Watts as Babe Paley, Demi Moore as Ann Woodward, Diane Lane as Slim Keith, and Chloë Sevigny as C.Z. Guest, but we also have Calista friggen Flockhart—Ms. Ally McBeal herself—as Lee Radziwill. Throw in the Upper East Side wardrobe and sky-high bouffants, and it couldn’t possibly be a gayer show.
And earlier this week, we were graced with even more fabulous casting excitement when the season-three stars of The White Lotus were announced. In the next installment, set in Thailand, we’re going to meet new hotel guests played by Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, and Jason Isaacs—but it was Parkey Posey’s name that set the internet ablaze. With roles in Party Girl, Best in Show, and Scream 3 (iconic, if you ask me) already under her belt, Posey is the perfect character actor to bring some spice to the luxurious White Lotus resort. And, again, it’s just so gay. If we don’t see her slinking about in some sort of sarong and bug-eye shades, we don’t want it.
But that’s not all! Just today, the trailer for the upcoming Neon film Mother’s Instinct dropped, and it stars not one but two Oscar-winning actors: Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. Mothers is correct. The plot seems dark and intriguing—it’s about guilt, suspicion, and paranoia following a tragic accident—but we’re distracted by the pair’s impeccable wigs and done-up housewife costumes. Gay, gay, gay…and keep it coming!
Luckily, we’re only in January, so here’s to hoping there’s even more fabulous casting news to come. A third season of Big Little Lies is reportedly underway, for one thing—just think of who could be in that. Vivica A. Fox? Mira Sorvino? Lindsay Lohan? Ball’s in your court, Hollywood.
