“This project is about the Southern Italian folklorist character called Lu Mamau. An immaterial figure who lives where there is no light, his role is to kidnap children who are too noisy and disobedient to their parents wishes. The children are then threatened with many fictional stories, ending with them being kidnapped by Lu Mamau, who, by putting them in his sack, takes them with him forever, far away to his dark and unknown lair. In this project, I explore the role of Lu Mamau and its relationship to the fear of the unknown, which is used as a tool of power and control over children. These pictures were staged and shot at night in The Hague, The Netherlands.”
