Lights, Cameras, Actors, Singers, Dancers, Supermodels—Action! How Vogue World: London Came Together

How many fashion editors, film and theater directors, event planners, actors, singers, models, and dancers does it take to stage one fashion show–cum–theatrical extravaganza? In this special behind-the-scenes look at Vogue World: London, you’ll find that the answer is…quite a lot!

As the sprawling team behind Vogue World 2023 entered its final days (and hours!) of pre-show prep, we sent a video crew to capture the brimming excitement—and outright fear—on the ground across the pond. While at Vogue House, British Vogue’s Laura Ingham and Jack Borkett were on day six of fittings (those amazing punk-, New Romantic–, and My Fair Lady*–*inspired looks didn’t style themselves), show director Emily Burns, creative producer Fran Miller, creative advisor Baz Luhrmann, and live director Sam Wrench all had their hands full at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, figuring out the rest of it.

Vogue World: London’s originating concept was fairly simple: to bring the worlds of fashion and the performing arts into joyful harmony. Rather more complicated were the dizzying logistics. How do see that 174 people, dressed in all manner of fantastical confections and variously strutting, singing, dancing, and performing bits of Shakespeare, are all synched up with various lighting and camera cues? And, perhaps even more importantly, how do you create an otherworldly experience in person that also feels special and engaging to those streaming it from home? As Burns vividly describes it, the whole project was a bit like transforming a pencil drawing into “a 3-D model that can also move autonomously.”

But don’t let us tell you how the Vogue World crew got everything done (and in “a very unrealistic amount of time,” per Luhrmann’s candid evaluation). Hear it straight from the source in the video above.
