In the world of beauty, we frequently talk about cats: The feline flick of a liner is always a topic of discussion in the Vogue beauty department. And while makeup artist Lisa Eldridge does love cats—she’s the mother to two felines, after all—when it comes to makeup, she’s more of a kitten fan.

“I love a cat eye, but not everyone can wear one,” says Eldridge—whose clients include Dua Lipa, Emma Chamberlain, and Kate Moss—of the frequently requested makeup look. Instead, she innovated, and the kitten eye was created. “The kitten eye has a very thin liner across the lid, as opposed to a thick line. It only thickens up after it passes the center of the eye, and then when it reaches the edge of the eye, there’s a small lift in it as well. And instead of lashes going up, they are fanned out to elongate the eye.”

Today, Eldridge is launching the essentials you need to create the look yourself: the Kitten Flick Eyeliner and Kitten Lash Mascara.

“The liquid liner has a really tiny, very flexible felt tip, and it was important to me that the ink came out perpetually, not in stages, for a smooth and even line,” Eldridge says of the R&D that went into the first product. “I hate it when the nib feels really nice but the ink comes out in stages so the liner looks like blobs or it turns on its side and you have to go in with a bunch of remover.”

For the mascara, Eldridge says its fanning capabilities all came down to the Japanese-inspired formula (“made with only soft waxes”) and brush shape. “It’s curved, which isn’t revolutionary, but it’s what I find personally easiest to push up lashes with,” she adds.

It’s a look she most recently applied to Emma Stone throughout her Poor Things press appearances and on Dua Lipa throughout her red-haired era. Oh, and one more of her clients, who recently brought her cat on the red carpet too: “Chip has been going all over with Claudia!” Eldridge notes of Claudia Schiffer and her cat, who recently walked the red carpet at the Argylle premiere in London together. “Cats and kitten eyes everywhere.”
