Marc Jacobs Takes It Back to the ’80s With a Retro Rager in Williamsburg

Marc Jacobs doesn’t throw parties; he gives the world full-scale events. That was the case last night at the designer’s blowout beauty bash in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where guests were called on to channel the over-the-top fashions of the punk princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and Robert Palmer video–worthy ’80s makeup. Transforming Schimanski (formerly Verboten) into a glitter-caked dance party, Jacobs and host LadyFag had guests wishing they’d lived through the decade themselves. “The entire atmosphere is electrifying—it’s almost making me wish I grew up in the ’80s,” shared model-actress Karrueche Tran, who dug the DJ Kiss soundtrack of techno beats. “I felt like I was in a movie; the music was so on point.”

Like seemingly every party in New York these days, social media served as a focal point with Victoria’s Secret Angel Sara Sampaio Snapchatting the night away and guests Instagramming themselves in front of photo booths, body paint–covered dancers, oversize logos, and of course, a trio of glamorous drag queens. Influencers also filled the room with Stacy Martin, Andreja Pejic, Issa Lish, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Harley Viera-Newton all part of the crowd. The mood of the night may have been over the top, but the decadence provided a welcome respite during a turbulent month. Celebrating the label’s Resort collection as well as its ability to pull off wild parties, it even managed another feat—getting guests in the mood to wear Marc. “[The clothes] make me feel like a different person walking down the street,” said model Hoyeon Jung. “There is a sense of power because they are of a style unique to Marc himself.” Given the amount of Jacobs on display and the fact that the event lasted well until the morning hours, it’s clear the energy was contagious.
