Blackpink is on tour which means we finally see our favorite pop star, Lisa, back on stage. First up this summer was the North American and European legs of the tour, and after a short break —just long enough for the members to attend fashion month—the iconic quartet is in Asia performing in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Hong Kong. Lisa is known for her killer on-stage persona and looks, but for tour, her stylists Brett Alan Nelson and Nan Nist went the extra mile, pulling not just designer but also custom one-of-a-kind pieces. Below, Vogue sits down with Nelson and Nist for an exclusive interview on what it’s like to style the global superstar.

Vogue: Walk us through Lisa’s looks. I know she wore a different designer in each of the American and European cities.

Brett Alan Nelson: I did Coachella with Lisa and a handful of projects with her after. Her team asked me to do the European and US legs of the tour, which I was super excited about. She obviously has great brand relationships, so I kind of reached out to everybody. I wanted to keep my options open for different ideas and sketches, and I wanted to do something that felt very different for her. The goal was for everything to feel rockstar, and I wanted every brand to have a rockstar moment.

In LA, I wanted her to be in an all-over Louis Vuitton monogram look. For Chicago we did a crystal look from Giuseppe di Morabito that she was actually supposed to wear at Coachella. And I love IB Kamara and the whole Off-White team; they did some custom pieces that felt very different than what they normally do and what Lisa normally wears, but if you look closely at the details on the jacket you see the Off-White logo and all these little moments that feel quite cool. Lisa is a huge Ferrari fan and she really wanted me to ask them to do something. The idea was to turn her into a little red hot Ferrari, and they made a custom belt in shiny vinyl that had the logo on it.

Can you also talk a little bit about the viral Labubu look Lisa wore?

It’s one of those fads that people are so hungry for, and Lisa is really the queen of Labubu. She was one of the first to really post them and it made the world go crazy. When we were fitting our first round, I made a joke and I was like, ‘should we make you a Labubu costume for the last night of my run with you?’ And her eyes lit up and she got so excited. Later that day I started working on sketches and designed a bunch of different options of what Lisa as a Labubu would be. There s a really amazing shop here in LA that I work with named Muto Little that has been making costumes for film and television since the early eighties. It s this group of women that are like magicians.

They brought the look of the top and skirt to life. And for the little custom Labubu, a guy named Marco Monroe worked on it; he even made one for Lady Gaga. But for Lisa’s concept, I gave him the same pink fabric used for Lisa’s outfit to make her a matching toy. I wanted to go the extra mile and asked Chris Ban to 3D scan a Labubu face to make a pair of custom sunglasses fit to Lisa’s face, which was pretty incredible.

Vogue: Tell us a bit about your inspirations and styling process for the looks Lisa s wears to perform solo during the Blackpink tour?

Nan Nin: I’m currently working on Lisa’s stage looks inspired by her Alter Ego album. Each look reflects a different facet of her character. I’ve been exploring new materials and collaborating with many talented and creative designers. Lisa is also very hands-on; she loves sharing her own ideas and adding personal touches to each look, which makes the process even more special.

What are some of your favorite looks from this leg of the tour?
Honestly, every look is my favorite—each one tells its own story. I’ve worked closely with all the designers to make every outfit meaningful, not just for Lisa, but also for the fans who come to see her in every city.

Of course, the Bangkok shows will be a bit extra special for Lisa as it’s her home country, so I wanted to create something truly memorable for her. The designs across the three days carry a narrative that continues and evolves from day one to day three.

And what were some of Lisa’s fashion musts for the first date in Taiwan?

We wanted to kick off the Asia tour with something playful and full of energy, inspired by Lisa’s “speedy” character. It’s a fun and dynamic start, setting the tone for what’s to come throughout the tour. For night one of Taiwan, we did a custom look from the brand Fanci Club. The design came out very playful in a sporty silhouette, with an unexpected pop of color and sparkling ornaments for stage. Completing the look was a pair of boots from Empty Behavior. We were inspired by boxing boots that combine sports technology and extremely protective designs used for football and motor sports.
