Shannon Ghannam, Global Education Director of Magnum Photos, and Alessia Glaviano, Artistic Director of PVF, present the five new nominees of the most renowned photographic agency in the world, Magnum Photos. In the same universal and creative spirit as the members who have preceded them, including founders Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, the work of Khalik Allah, Sabiha Çimen, Colby Deal, Yael Martínez and Hannah Price demonstrate the constant evolution of, and enduring need for, documentary photography.

Khalik Allah
Khalik Allah (b. 1985) is a New York-based photographer and filmmaker who practices Camera Ministry with an eye as open as his heart. The resulting work has been described as “street opera” and noted for its beautifully visceral humanity. After a number of short films that reflect relationships formed through portraiture, Allah advanced his artistry with the feature length documentary Field Niggas (2015), shot at nighttime on the corner of Harlem’s 125th St. and Lexington Avenue. This corner also served as the basis for his first photography book Souls Against the Concrete, published by University of Texas Press in 2017. Allah continued with Black Mother (2018), an ecstatic expression of reverence and realities across Jamaica. This award winning film has been seen in festivals, museums and schools around the world; further released in the UK and the US through distributors Dogwoof and Grasshopper Film. Allah’s films are available on the Criterion Channel. Khalik is currently at work on his second photo book from 125th and Lexington. Khalik became a Magnum Nominee member in 2020.\

Sabiha Çimen
Sabiha Çimen was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1986. She is a self-taught photographer, focusing on women, Islamic culture, portraiture and still life. Çimen graduated from Istanbul Bilgi University with an undergraduate degree in International Trade and Finance, and a Masters degree in Cultural Studies. Her Master’s thesis on subaltern studies, which includes her photo story titled ‘Turkey as a Simulated Country’, was published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2019. Çimen became a Magnum Nominee member in 2020.
Colby Deal
Colby Deal (b. 1988, based in Houston, USA) is a photographic artist born and raised in Houston, Texas. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in the practice of photography from The University of Houston. Within his practice he explores the culmination of elements of the psychological environment as well as the physical. He shows the dynamic range of family, community and the individual by combining street photography and portraiture to capture vibrant communities. In the recent years he has incorporated the medium of sculpture and public art as a means of preserving cultural characteristics that are being erased and positively influencing his community and others alike. Colby is directly inspired by his upbringing through getting to see his family’s photographs that were mostly taken by his father. This appreciation for slowing down and concentrating on photographing what’s right in front of him, “The Now”, has led him to be more in touch with using analog photography. Deal is an alumni of Project Row Houses residency, Red Line Contemporary Art Center residency in Denver, Colorado and in 2020, was awarded an exhibition at the Houston Museum of African American Culture. Colby became a Magnum nominee member in 2020.

Yael Martínez
Martínez’s work addresses fractured communities in his native Mexico. He often works symbolically to evoke a sense of emptiness, absence, and pain suffered by those affected by organized crime in the region. He is the recipient of the Eugene Smith Award 2019, was fellow of the Photography and Social Justice Program of The Magnum Foundation. He won the 2nd Prize of the World Press Photo contests 2019 in the category of long-term projects. Martínez was granted of the Magnum Foundation in the grants: Emergency Fund and On Religion in 2016- 2017. His work has been featured in group shows in America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
His work has been published by: The Wall Street Journal,Blomberg news, Lens NY times, Time, Vogue Italy, Vrij Nederland, Aperture. Martínez became a Magnum Nominee member in 2020.
Hannah Price
Raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, Hannah Price (b. 1986) is a photographic artist and filmmaker primarily interested in documenting relationships, race politics, and misperception. Price is internationally known for her project City of Brotherly Love (2009-2012), a series of photographs of the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia. In 2014, Price graduated from Yale School of Art MFA Photography program, receiving the Richard Benson Prize for excellence in photography and is currently a Magnum Nominee. Over the past nine years, Price’s photos have been displayed in several cities across the United States with a few residing in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Currently, Ms. Price lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
Shannon Ghannam
Shannon Ghannam is the Global Education Director at Magnum Photos, responsible for the celebrated agency
s educational programming globally, including the recently launched online learning platform Magnum Learn learn.magnumphotos.com. Previously she managed Content Strategy and Development at Reuters, working to showcase on multiple platforms the agency’s multimedia content. Shannon has collaborated on numerous photographic books, international exhibitions and multimedia projects including the Emmy award winning photojournalism app Reuters The Wider Image. Shannon has worked in various roles during a 20 year career including Screen Labs, Night Contact photography and multimedia festival, Australian Associated Press (AAP), The Australian Photojournalist Journal, The National Archives of Australia as well as developing a year long collaborative portraiture project with refugee communities for the Australian Red Cross. She studied at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, Australia where she graduated with First Class Honours in Photography.

Alessia Glaviano
Alessia Glaviano is the Brand Visual Director of Vogue Italia and Director of the Photo Vogue Festival. Glaviano is a leading figure in the panorama of international photographic criticism. Besides curating a series of interviews with the Masters of photography for Vogue Italia’s website and instagram, which have acquired enormous popularity among the community of people interested in photography and which are also broadcast on Sky Arte channel, in 2011 Glaviano launched Photo Vogue, an innovative platform on which users can share their own photographs knowing they can rely on the curatorial supervision of professional photo editors.
At a time when photography was already ubiquitous online, Alessia felt that what was missing was a curated platform dedicated to it.
Conceived as a community with a strong sense of belonging, as of today, Photo Vogue counts over 230,000 photographers, from amateurs to professionals, hailing from all over the world, with a shared passion for photography and the desire to help each other and grow together. Anyone can register and upload images of all genres, from portraiture to reportage, fashion and street photography.
Curating a pool of incredible image-makers from all around the world, Photo Vogue is a great example of diversity behind the camera.
Many of Photo Vogue photographers have grown to become some of the most interesting voices in contemporary photography, who now regularly produce editorials and branded content for the most prestigious international magazines. The mission of Photo Vogue has always been to champion talent and contribute to shaping a richer and more diverse industry. In order to have a physical and virtual space in time to bring the community together and further the conversation around the promotion of creativity, diversity and justice in image-making, in 2016 Milan hosted the first edition of the Photo Vogue Festival. The event marked the first conscious fashion photography festival dedicated to the shared ground between Ethics and Aesthetics, bound to an influential fashion publication, and engaging the whole city of Milan with talks, exhibitions and photography-related initiatives. The 4 editions of the festival in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 were always met with critical and public success.
Besides the editorial activity, Alessia holds lectures and conferences on a regular basis. Some of the institutes and universities she was invited as guest lecturer include: IED, Bocconi University and the Milan Polytechnic.
Glaviano was invited to participate as jury member in numerous internationally acclaimed photography contests including the World Press Photo and the Festival International de Mode et de Photographie à Hyères; and has participated in several portfolio review sessions, including the “New York Times Portfolio Reviews”.
