In astrology, your rising sign describes your appearance and the first impressions you make—unlike your sun sign, which represents your core identity, and your moon sign, which reveals your emotional inner world. In fact, your rising sign is sometimes explained as “the self you present to the world.” And, yes, that does include your beauty look.
“Your rising sign dictates the energy you’re putting out into the world, as well as your aesthetic, so obviously that relates to makeup and style choices,” astrologer Lisa Stardust tells Vogue, adding that you might also want to look to your Venus sign (which rules beauty) and your sun sign for inspo. Along with thinking about how your rising sign’s traits relate to makeup—for example, Gemini risings are playful, which translates to colorful, fun makeup looks—Stardust also suggests looking to celebs who share your rising sign for inspo (we give you some ideas, below).
If you don’t know your rising sign, you’ll need to input the time, date, and location of your birth into a birth chart calculator. A little background: Your rising sign (also called your ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon when you were born, which changes every two-ish hours. (If you don’t know your birth time, ask your family or check your birth certificate. If your birth certificate doesn’t contain your birth time, you can go with what’s called a “noon chart,” placing noon as your birth time.)

Aries Rising
Aries rising is bold and unafraid to stand out—meaning a red lip is a perfect choice. “I know it’s cliche, but Aries risings really do love a bold lip because they like people to see them coming,” says Stardust. Plus, Aries is the first fire sign of the zodiac, meaning that they love shades of red.

Taurus Rising
Unlike Aries rising, Taurus rising shines in a more natural look. Specifically, Stardust suggests they choose neutrals for eyes, lips, and cheeks—think shades of brown, bronze, pink, and taupe. Yes, that means that the latte makeup trend was basically designed in a lab to look amazing on Taurus risings.

Gemini Rising
Playful Gemini risings just want to have fun—and along with fellow air sign Aquarius, they’re the most likely rising signs to experiment with makeup, trying out wildly different trends and moods. “Gemini risings are going to be all over the place—think white mascara or purple eyeliner,” says Stardust.

Sweet Cancer risings are very romantic and that applies to their beauty look, too. Instead of choosing bold colors like Aries or Gemini, a Cancer rising should aim for dewy, ethereal, clean-girl beauty. “Cancer risings look great with rosy cheeks,” says Stardust.

Leo rising was born for the spotlight, and their signature beauty look is Old Hollywood glam with dramatic eyes and lips. “Leo rising is someone who really accentuates with darker eye makeup and a statement lip color,” says Stardust. “They have a dramatic look.”

Similar to fellow earth sign Taurus rising, Virgo rising shines in earthy shades. “Virgo rising has a little bit of a bohemian vibe,” Stardust says. Think glossy lips, rosy cheeks, and minimal foundation so that your freckles show through.

As *the* sign of beauty and aesthetics, Libra rising’s beauty look is carefully considered. “They re going to have a monochrome, very refined palette,” says Stardust. “They look great in winged eyeliner.”

As the sign of transformation, Scorpio risings rarely do their makeup the same way twice. “They also are going to play with their looks a lot. One day they’ll kind of have a fresh face, and then the next day they’ll be fully done up,” says Stardust. However, whether they’re going for a full face or barely-there beauty, Scorpio Risings should emphasize their eyes with full lashes and sculpted brows.

Sagittarius rising is a little bit of a contradiction: Stardust suggests they go for a neutral, understated lip look and experiment with their eye makeup. “They always have their more neutral lip colors, but they also kind of like the sparkle—think glitter eyeshadow,” says Stardust. They also like to experiment with different styles and aesthetics.
