The Spring 2019 shows in New York were, in a word, wet. After the late-summer heat wave left during the first day or two, the skies opened up and the rain came down on the pretty heads of the editors, buyers, and influencers who sat outside in downpours for several of the big shows like Rodarte, Telfar, and Oscar de la Renta. Temperatures and humidity rose and fell—and Fashion Week turned into a game of wardrobe switch-ups. How to dress for a schizophrenic forecast? The answer is experimentation, and the street style set came out on the other end of the clouds with a range of transitional, covetable outerwear. There were pleather trenchcoats and classic blazers, as well as patterned and patchworked denim jackets and kimonos and printed anoraks.
Out of the gray rain, the fashion gods have given us a plethora of options for outerwear to transition seamlessly from summer to fall. Here are the most pragmatically cool pieces to wear now, no matter the forecast.
