At a March in New York, Protestors Wore Orange to Show Their Support for Gun Control

Two weeks ago, a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 19 children and 2 teachers. Unbelievably enough, in the 14 days since that shooting, there have been 33 other mass shootings in the U.S.; and while it’s hard to process such a superabundance of tragedy, ever since Congress allowed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban to expire in 2004, gun violence has been all but normalized in American life.

On Sunday, June 4, the New York City chapter of Moms Demand Action and Guns Down Life Up called for an end to this terrifying status quo, organizing the 2022 Walk in Solidarity With Survivors in Manhattan’s Foley Square. Speakers included gun violence survivors Carlyn Dixon, Antonius Wiriadjaja, and Trenelle Gabay, as well as Jose M. Prince, MD, who currently serves as VP System Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Acute Care Surgery for New York’s largest health care provider, Northwell Health.

Orange-clad protestors crossed the Brooklyn Bridge together on foot in the afternoon, sending a strong visual message that they were united in the fight to end the scourge of gun violence in the U.S. See the event from photographer Lili Kobielski’s viewpoint below.
