Sea-soaked, pool-dipped, sun-exposed—hair should be high on the list of things that require extra care in the summertime, up there with skin, eyes, and lips. Even wind, while not a bad styling tool (or vacation situation, see: sailing in the South of France or road-tripping in a convertible along the California coast), can add to seasonal woes, like dry, limp, and brittle locks. For protection, the Brigitte Bardot–inspired headscarf or Georgia O’Keeffe–esque wide-brimmed hat are a start, but some of the best defenses are actually built into products like protein-packed shampoos and conditioners, which offer more complete coverage.

For parched, chlorine-soaked hair, a moisturizing shampoo from Nexxus that’s silicone-free and enhanced by a nourishing caviar complex cleans and rebuilds without weighing down hair. Conditioner applied just at the ends and left in for three-to-five minutes untangles, moisturizes deeply and coats each strand with a hyper-hydrating barrier. For added protection, thoroughly blend in the brand s replenishing masque and leave hair wrapped and untouched for three minutes before rinsing, conditioning, and soaking again—in cool water only. Combing cleansed hairs before leaving the shower is another expert-approved hack to separating lengths without pulling on roots. Rinse and air dry: heat, even friction caused by towel-drying, will cause extra fraying.

Traveling light? Nexxus’s easy-to-pack water-based serum contains a complex blend of conditioning oils that repair and soften from root to tip. Use generously, then surf, swim, repeat!
