New York Fashion Week may have wrapped, but there are still plenty of street style lessons to be gleaned. Our biggest takeaway from a week of icy sidewalks, endless subway rides, and late night dinners downtown? Statement outerwear always does the heavy lifting.
The NYFW Outerwear Check List
From celebrities to editors moving between shows, five brands consistently dominated the scene: Nour Hammour, Arma, Toteme, Khaite, and Yves Salomon. While each offers a wide range of winter classics, this season’s standouts were clear: plush shearling, buttery leathers, and bold animal prints that refused to blend in a sea of puffer coats.
The beauty of a great coat is its versatility. It can ground a look through quiet sophistication, or make a statement loud enough that the outerwear becomes the outfit. Take notes from Nordstrom’s fashion director Rickie De Sole who seemingly took a page from the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy style book when she stepped out in a leopard print topper from Arma alongside a black turtleneck, beige skirt, and black leather boots. It’s pared-back maximalism at it’s finest. Meanwhile, Lisa Aiken, Vogue’s own executive fashion director, stayed true to her signatures, opting for a sleek leather funnel-neck jacket from Khaite, light-wash jeans, and pointy black boots. The resulting look was minimalism with impact. What both these looks prove is that when the outer layer is strong, you need little more than a few essentials to make the ensemble sing.
Ahead, a closer look at the five outerwear brands that became the main character at NYFW—and the key pieces to investment from each.
Arma
Defined as a modern leather house, Amsterdam label Arma has expanded its offerings since their founding in 1985. The brand focuses on simple, streamlined silhouettes crafted from elevated materials—resulting in timeless wardrobe essentials that feel current yet enduring. A recent favorite amount Vogue editors, Chloe Malle spotlighted the leopard print coat (as seen above on Nordstrom’s Rickie De Sole) in her most recent Malle Wear email send.
Nour Hammour
The Paris-based label has an expert eye for outerwear. Founded and run by Erin Conry Webb and, of course, Nour Hammour herself, the brand brings a feminine touch to a category that can often feel bulky or overly masculine. The brand has grown a devoted celebrity following over the years, thanks to the co-founders’ elevated and distinct takes on shearling, suede, and leather. Fans include Vittoria Ceretti (seen in the longline Gotham coat), Dakota Johnson attending Sundance in the Karina coat, and Kendall Jenner sitting court side in the Kerri belted jacket.
Toteme
This Stockholm-based consistently delivers standout outerwear. Whether through bold color, like a crimson red trench, or thoughtful updates to classic silhouettes, such as their bestselling scarf coat with wraparound fringing (as seen here on Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo), the label knows how to balance statement with wearability. When opting for a piece from Toteme, you truly can’t go wrong with the style, quality, or precision of the silhouette.
Khaite
Founded just over a decade ago, New York-based Khaite has become a force on the NYFW scene. Beloved for its leather goods and accessories (Vogue’s own Lisa Aiken is seen here in her standby Arizona ankle boots!), it’s no surprise that the brand’s outerwear was a popular choice this week. Spotted on editors and celebrities alike, a coat from Khaite delivers effortless ease with just the right amount of attitude. Style the classic Shellar jacket or the Dean silhouette with worn-in jeans for a luxurious day-to-night look, in keeping with the city’s edge.
Yves Salomon
For over 100 years, Yves Salomon has focused on leather and shearling, helping to evolve and redefine the market along the way. Passed down through generations, the brand is run by father and son duo, Yves Salomon himself and his son Thomas. The pair continue to innovate, including with the introduction of their fur free line, Météo, and their ski label YS Mountain Collection. With the long heritage and love from celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Katie Holmes, and Bella Hadid the jackets make for a significant investment, but one well worth the price tag—these are pieces you keep in rotation for years.
