The Gucci collaboration juggernaut continues. After recent normcore-chic tie-ups with The North Face, luxury hackings of Balenciaga and retro sports home runs with Adidas, the Italian giant has joined forces with Palace for a new “experiment”.
The maximalist fashion house and London skater favorite have more in common than one might assume, says Alessandro Michele. Both brands have an undeniable influence on youth culture, but also feed off that spirit to fuel their own output. “This didn’t come about by chance, but rather from the will of people who shared the same things, from heterogeneity, from the street, and there is really a bit of everything inside,” says the Gucci creative director, who has always admired Lev Tanju and Gareth Skewis’s counter-cultural vision for Palace.
The clothes: naturally, they are a hypebeast’s dream. Michele encouraged Palace to venture into womenswear for the first time with tailored skirt suits, monogrammed minis and the now prerequisite crop tops, but the logo-heavy collection aims to appeal to everyone. Among the highlights? A hot new take on the Gucci loafer featuring a “P charm” linked around the gold horsebit hardware, and the separates stamped repeatedly with Gucci’s double-G and Palace’s tri-ferg tag.
Entry-level products, like sports socks, slides and tees, will fly when they hit the virtual shelves of the Gucci Vault on 21 October, while collectibles, such as a 50-piece V7 motorbike edit realized with Moto Guzzi, will have streetwear fans queuing round the block at pop-up shops and Palace store takeovers. For dedicated Lev supporters, who happily wait for hours to snap up his latest work, the new-look Palace windows in London, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo—the first time the brand has ever allowed another creative to reconfigure them—are just as exciting as the fresh duffle bags.
Unexpectedly, perhaps, the item you’re most likely to see splashed across social media is not a trainer or a wallet, but a safe manufactured by Conforti. A wry nod to Gucci’s Vault concept, there are only 10 in the entire world—or the galaxy, as the Max Siedentopf-directed film would have you believe. In the campaign, other-worldly beings party alongside Gucciphiles to The Prodigy’s “Out of Space” at a remote house party dripping with Palace Gucci. In this bizarre reality, one thing we can bet on is that logo fever still reigns supreme.
