According to the Pantone Color Institute, 2019 will be all about Living Coral, a color which represents “playful expression,” and our “innate need for optimism.” (After this year, we can use all the innate optimism we can get.) Living Coral is technically a “coral hue with a golden undertone”—a few shades louder than pink, but softer than red. Pantone acknowledges that their choice also highlights an environmental treasure under threat: “Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.” (While you’re on the look-out for the color, consider the sunscreens that will help save the reefs, and the island resorts that are preserving them.)
It’s a cool-girl lipstick color, and the ideal pop against light blue or teal in a maximalist bedroom. It jives well with gold jewelry, and a big straw bag. It was also all over the runway for Spring 2019, from Prada camisoles to a Brandon Maxwell shirtdress. But the shade can be kind of hard to pinpoint—in the online sea of items, Living Coral goes by many names (salmon, papaya, et cetera).
