PhotoVogue Festival 2023: The Talks

This conversation took place on November 16th 2023 as part of the PhotoVogue Festival 2023 which centered around the theme “What Makes us Human?: Image in the Age of A.I.”

PhotoVogue Festival 2023: On the evening of the 16th, an engaging conversation awaits as part of the festival s enriching program. Join us for a thought-provoking dialogue with Karni Arieli, a photographer and director, renowned for founding the transformative Eye Mama movement alongside several contributors of the Eye Mama book. This discussion aligns seamlessly with the festival s theme "What Makes Us Human."

The Eye Mama book stands as a testament to the profound mama narrative and the unique mama gaze, revealing the perspectives of female and non-binary photographers as they peer into the intimate realms of home and caregiving. Comprising over 200 evocative images, the book sheds light on the often-unseen aspects of care, motherhood, family dynamics, and the post-motherhood journey.

Conceived by the BAFTA-nominated filmmaker and photographer Karni Arieli during the global pandemic, the Eye Mama movement was born out of a collective need to introspectively examine home and caregiving through the lens of the "mama gaze." The resulting visual movement captures the intricate interplay of love and hardship, beauty and struggle, unveiling the deeply personal and poetic truths of the participating mamas and artists.

National Geographic, Vogue, Stern, Romper, British Journal of Photography, Creative Review, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, Aesthetica, and Another Magazine are among the prestigious publications that have featured the Eye Mama Project. The book features a foreword by Alessia Glaviano, the Head of Global PhotoVogue, and Annie Wang, an acclaimed artist.
