Though the coronavirus pandemic has caused many of Pride’s jubilant festivities to go virtual this year, there’s no reason not to still embrace that celebratory spirit. After all, what better way to make a scene-stealing Zoom entrance than with sparkling swooshes at eye-level, a trippy tie-dye pout, or brows adorned with an assortment of flashy crystals?
“To me, Pride makeup is a way to express your love, joy and support for the LGBTQ+ community through colorful expressions and designs,” says Fara Homidi, who dreamt up a parade of such head-turning beauty moments, broken down below, that riff on the iconic rainbow flag. As the makeup artist behind Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s electric bolts of neon eyeliner and Off-White’s high-wattage hot pink mascara, Homidi has become known for subversive pops of pigment applied with a raw, real-life edge, so rest assured: “There are no rules,” she insists. In other words, bring a free hand and an open mind; it’s time to get creative.
The Rainbow Stroke
Add a drop of water to a medium-sized synthetic brush, such as Dior’s foundation brush, and swirl it into Diamond FX’s neon palette. Apply onto the face with even pressure, drawing in a S shape (or desired shape) in one motion. Repeat with different colors. Dip a skinny Q-tip into Bioderma Micellar Water to clean and shape edges.
The Bedazzled Brow
Dip a skinny Q-tip into Duo Eyelash Adhesive and dot the area under the beginning of the brow. Using tweezers, pick up a crystal and place it on the glue spot. Repeat until you reach the tail of your brow. Apply a wash of Makeup Forever Star Lit Diamond Powder in #103 Pink White all over eyelids and cheekbones.
The Technicolor Lash
Mixing a powder pigment with MAC mascara mixing medium, use disposable mascara wands to apply each color for clean application. Apply three coats of each color to build brightness and volume.
The Sparkling Swoosh
Add a drop of water to a flat synthetic brush, such as Makeup Forever brush #410, and swirl it into Mehron’s rainbow palette. Apply onto the eye with even pressure, pulling out towards hairline. Dip a skinny Q-tip into micellar water to clean and shape into preferred pattern. Gently pat on glitter, mimicking the rainbow colors underneath, so that the colors underneath can still peek through.
The Graphic Cheek
Using a range of flat synthetic brushes, paint various colors onto the face. Keep skinny Q-tips and micellar water nearby to clean and shape the strokes. With a medium-sized fluffy brush, go over the face with a translucent powder to set the design.
The Prismatic Pout
Apply Guerlain Liplift Lip Primer all over lips for an even, slightly muted base. Go over lips again with a veil of concealer. Using Coloured Raine’s Pigment Palette, apply colors one at a time in an almost circular pattern. Fill in with different colors, making sure to follow your lip shape. Coat tongue with edible glitter.
