Photography as Visual Activism brings together Zanele Muholi, Alessia Glaviano, and Francesca de’ Medici to reflect on photography as a tool for visibility, resistance, and care. Centered on Muholi’s lifelong commitment to self-representation and community building, the conversation explores how images can challenge dominant narratives, affirm marginalized identities, and operate as acts of political and ethical responsibility. Moving between artistic practice, editorial contexts, and lived experience, the panel considers what it means to make images that do not merely represent, but actively intervene in the world.

Francesca de’ Medici is a collector and independent curator. She has been collaborating with South African visual activist and photographer Zanele Muholi since 2021, curating and facilitating exhibitions and projects. Francesca’s latest project is with Sabelo Mlangeni, for whom she curated a show at ADA in Rome. She lives in Rome with her partner and their four children.
