In an era where the politics of representation are constantly being renegotiated, this selection brings together the work of the finalists of the PhMuseum 2025 Women Photographers Grant, presenting a landscape of contemporary practices from female and non-binary authors.

These works explore photography as a tool for self-determination, utilizing diverse visual strategies to document intimacy, challenge archival silences, and confront urgent social issues. All together, they show us how we can center authorship as an act of agency and how it can shape our collective understanding of the world.

The projects were selected by an independent jury comprising Monica de Miranda (Visual Artist, Filmmaker, and Researcher), Katy Hundertmark (Curator and Managing Editor of Foam Magazine), Amak Mahmoodian (Multidisciplinary Artist and Educator), and Diana Markosian (Documentary Photographer, Writer, and Filmmaker) within a context where PhMuseum is actively committed to redefining the photographic canon by amplifying the visions of new generations.

Rodeo attendee Deidre Webb, known as Lady D, visits the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) in Oakland from Washington State in 2019. A few years before, she visited a close friend in Oakland who invited her to the rodeo, and since then she’s become a loyal fan. A survey taken at the 2018 event revealed that 56 percent of attendees were new to the rodeo, and about 45 percent were introduced to the rodeo through friends or by word of mouth. “At the BPIR we found family,” Lady D says. “My first day there, Pam let me ride her horse, and she had one of the other cowgirls walk me around that whole big back area on the horse. So yes, we found family, for real.”Gabriela Hasbun
