“When you make movies, people come up and retouch your hair and makeup all day. So what starts out as very light makeup turns into 13 layers of concealer by the end of the day,” says actor Rachel Zegler. “That takes a toll on your skin, so you want to do as much as you can to soothe it and avoid any breakouts, spots, or bumps.” Apart from the occupational challenges, the star of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story notes that she has relatively easy skin to care for, so her routine focuses on calming and smoothing skin texture.

After cleansing, she places the Dr. Dennis Gross LED device over her face, which uses a combination of red and blue lights to reduce breakouts and boost collagen. “I’ve noticed a difference ever since I started using it,” she says. Next comes the Lanolips Superbalm, followed by a vitamin C serum and moisturizer by Bliss, Augustinus Bader’s face oil, and an eye cream by SkinCeuticals.

When it comes to beauty idols, the 20-year-old is quick to cite Selena Quintanilla and Shakira, who is from the same Colombian city as Zegler. “As I’ve grown older, I’ve just been able to appreciate more of those beauty standards in Latin America,” Zegler says.

Moving onto makeup, she blends a light layer of the BareMinerals tinted moisturizer with a foundation brush, followed by Charlotte Tilbury’s cream eyeshadow for a subtle wash of color—opting to finish her eye look before applying concealer so as to not ruin her base prematurely. Then, Zegler buffs a Giorgio Armani bronzer just below her cheekbones, along with her nose, jaw, and forehead if she desires a bit more shadow. Her favorite Chanel blush adds even more color and shimmer to her cheeks, before she accentuates her naturally thick eyebrows with the Chanel Boy de Chanel Eyebrow Pencil followed by the BareMinerals brow gel. “It just helps to keep everything locked down and adds a little more fullness if I so please,” she explains as she completes her look with a nude lip and the Nars Climax Mascara. “I hope you learned something—not only about how you look, but about how you feel, because that is all to do with beauty.”
