“Reimagine” by Laura Gauch

A fashion story in a dance studio about body, vulnerability, and freedom from expectations.

"I often saw the same bodies framed in the same attire, the same colors, the same poses. The dance studio was a space of repetition, discipline, and correction — a room where individuality was often subdued in the name of uniformity. Reimagine began as a question: How can we see the body differently in the dance studio?

In this editorial story, movement is no longer bound to choreography but exists in dialogue with stillness. Fashion takes the place of costume, becoming gesture itself — a means of inhabiting the body differently. Here, the body is soft, unapologetic, and powerful, resisting tradition while embracing fragility, rhythm, and strength on its own terms.

Styled by India Reed with pieces by Paloma Wool, Reformation, and vintage selections, the clothing reshapes the codes of studio dress. Legwarmers and tights are still present but are layered and reinterpreted; textures clash and converse.

Shot entirely on film and hand-printed, the images carry the imperfections of process. Each frame holds onto its texture, embracing chance and materiality as part of the narrative.

The shoot itself unfolded collaboratively on a summer day in New York. Between takes, music filled the room — Solange, SZA, Baby Rose and others — setting a rhythm that shaped both the silences and the movements. The process was as important as the images themselves, built around trust, improvisation, and presence. In this way, Reimagine is both an editorial and a reflection: a reconsideration of what a studio can hold, and how the body might find freedom in a space once built for expectation."

About the artist

Laura Gauch is a Swiss-Chilean visual artist working with photography and film. Her practice began in her teenage years and has since deepened through an exploration of her Chilean heritage and family history. This exploration led her to themes of diaspora, transgenerational trauma, and the representation of bodies — particularly female ones — in media. These questions remain central to her work, infusing her projects with intimacy and a personal perspective.

Through her portraits and films, Laura seeks to create images that resonate emotionally, fostering connections between the images and the realities of those who encounter it. Her work has been published in platforms such as Notion and Wonderland. Her documentary film Raíces received critical recognition, winning Best Documentary Short at the Nova Frontier Film Festival in 2021. In 2023, Laura was awarded an artist residency at the NARS Foundation in New York, where she created The Ocean Is Closed on Mondays. The project went on to win first prize at the Prix Photoforum and the Kiefer Hablitzel Ernst Göhner Prize and was selected for the Oscar-qualifying Palm Springs ShortFest, among many other festivals. Most recently, she was invited to present her work at the PhotoVogue Festival in Milan in 2025 and received a grant to develop her next film.
