What Does Rihanna Love More Than Making Music? Furry Hats

What does Rihanna love more than releasing new music? A lot of things. But on this occasion, we’re talking about her allegiance to one particular accessory: the furry hat. And that’s precisely what she wore for a quick trip to Target to pick up some last minute items before New Year’s Eve—and then, onwards to karaoke with the girls. The furry hat is both a transeasonal and night vibe transcending piece for Rih.

Photographed on December 29, the musician and beauty mogul was spotted in a vintage, tricolor brown Oscar De La Renta fur hat—sourced from vintage boutique My Haute Wardrobe. She also wore indigo-colored baggy jeans, a leather jacket with forest green suede panels on the elbows from Enfants Richés Deprimes, a vintage Tupac and Biggie commemorative t-shirt (layered with her own diamonds), Bottega Veneta Haddock lace-up ankle boots, and a ’90s Gucci by Tom Ford green fur evening bag, sourced from The RealList (a vintage and luxury dealer who’ve helped out Olivia Rodrigo and Hailey Bieber with some stellar recent archive pulls).

Rih has a history with a furry headpiece. For the Fashion Awards in December, she wore a sculptural Christian Lacroix fall 2002 couture minidress in a sky blue fuzz with an enormous matching hat in what was the standout look of the evening. The Fenty founder also keeps a cast of British milliner Emma Brewin’s hats in her arsenal: she’s worn Brewin’s Pistachio and light pink Blossom bucket hats on various occasions for a variety of vibes, paired with blue jeans and sneakers and dressed up in archive Dior dresses. Prior to the 2023 Met Gala honoring Karl Lagerfeld, Rihanna went full monochrome maximalist and wore a striking custom snow-white faux fur and black ostrich feathered domed hat by London designer Benny Andallo with big Chanel logo glasses. Another ginormous hat by Andallo was paired with feathered Tom Ford SS99 jeans for a casual day out shopping.

The Oscar De La Renta fur hat has kept pride of place in Rihanna’s wardrobe, as she’s been spotted out and about wearing it before—the last time was a chic affair in Santa Monica, with a neck-down Aläia look comprising a fur-armed silk bomber jacket and blue jeans with her fave shoe designer Amina Muaddi’s croc pumps on her feet. A true lesson in animal textures.

We also know Rihanna has a love for partner A$AP Rocky’s wardrobe, which she showed off once again. She’s worn the Bottega Veneta boots on a few occasions in New York—the same pair Rocky wore in a 2023 campaign for the label the pair both love. The entire silhouette and plays with texture is a Rihanna-Rocky love affair.

And after that glamorous, speedy trip to Target, Rihanna headed to the Girls Love Karaoke event in NYC, where she sang “Needed Me” and “Sex With Me” from her last album, 2016’s ANTI. She told attendees she had five minutes before her “battery” was “about to burn out”. Quite relatable, at the end of the intense festive season.

As she told British Vogue in 2023, Rih feels a self-inflicted “toxic pressure” to make music that could come close to ANTI, which she describes as the “most cohesive album I’ve ever made.” And while she did tease new music in April 2024, telling Entertainment Tonight that the music she’s working on is “so good” (and that her and Rocky’s sons may feature), karaoke is what we’ll have to savor for now.
