Every week, Vogue will be spotlighting tastemakers across industries to hear how they’ve been approaching self-care during the coronavirus pandemic. We asked actress, model, and LGBTQ+ advocate Ruby Rose about how she has been staying sane at home. Should you already be a fan of the former Batwoman star, then you know she is staying creative, starting first with a bold, new hair style. Here, Rose shares how she’s been nourishing her soul at home from writing music to “adopting” a grandparent.

1. I’m cooking again.

It has been too long since I’ve had the time to spend on cooking. I find cooking really relaxing and cathartic, plus I love knowing exactly what is going into my food. As a vegan I love finding new ways to create dishes that may not traditionally be vegan. It is important to keep in mind that with all the extended time we have spent isolated or quarantined, our immune systems are weakened and our need for vitamins and exercise as well as sleep and self-care is integral. One of my favorite recipes to make is the minestrone.

2. I “adopted” a grandparent.

And yes, my own grandparents were jealous. The Adopt a Grandparent campaign was created to bring a sense of comfort to young people and the elderly who may not have grandparents [or] grandchildren of their own, with the aim of creating long-lasting intergenerational friendships. I discovered the program through a friend and have since had a beautiful friendship with a woman called Iris in the U.K.

She has a heart of gold as well as a wit and humor that leaves me in stitches. You can sign up to volunteer at CHDliving.co.uk. It doesn’t take much time, just a Skype a week and you can send letters or videos if you like also. But it is profoundly rewarding.

3. I have been making and writing music again.

Playing guitar, learning keys again, putting my thoughts into poetry, writing, journaling, or songwriting are things that keep my soul full and my mind busy. I also love listening to music in between the news cycles. It is important to be educated and aware, but it is equally as important to take some time to nourish your soul when you feel like a recharge.

4. I found the freedom to cut my hair off.

I first shaved it, then split dyed it blue and pink, then I decided to bleach it again, which was ambitious and I don’t recommend doing it without “adult supervision.” So I ended up with a few, um, clumps missing but I have been taking care of my hair with my friend Riawna Capri’s hair brand In Common. I used to just use a shampoo and conditioner, In Common’s Clear Haze and Velvet Cloud, but ever since bleaching, my hair needed more moisture. So I started using the full In Common system by adding in Mended Sea and Magic Myst to the mix and my hair got 1,000 times happier. Then, of course, I shaved it again, but still.
