Last night at the Emmys, Selena Gomez served up old Hollywood glamour—proving that the classics never go out of style, especially on the red carpet. The star, whose Hulu series Only Murders In The Building was nominated for Outstanding Comedy series, graced the red carpet in a white beaded Celine halter neck gown styled by Kate Young. With a pair of dangling emerald earrings by Boucheron and a dazzling ring, the look was a study in minimalist glamour.
The perfect complement to her classic glam was a luminous complexion perfected by celebrity makeup artist Melissa Murdick. “The idea was to not over-complicate it—keeping makeup effortless and bronzed. The most important part of the look is bringing in the glow and getting the skin flawless,” Murdick tells Vogue. In that spirit, skin prep made all the difference. First, she opted for a pore-diffusing primer on Gomez’s T-zone to minimize shine. Then, beneath a veil of foundation, Rare Beauty’s Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight was applied to the high points of the face (think: cheekbones, temples, and the bridge of the nose) to build the luminosity, followed by a spritz of face mist. “All of this goes underneath foundation because that sets the stage for a glow that looks like it’s coming from within, rather than sitting on top and super shimmery,” she explains. After, Murdick set the T-zone with a bit of loose powder.
“With red carpet makeup, one of our concerns is getting the shine in the right places,” she explains. “You want to ensure that even if you’re making a glowing complexion, you keep the center of the face where you get oily, matte.” That way, you can build the radiance in other areas of the face. “It’s funny how these little tweaks to your makeup take it from every day to looking really professional and polished,” she continues.
The rest of Gomez’s makeup hinged on simple touches: softly defined brows, swishes of champagne and rich brown eyeshadows across the lids, a touch of liner, and buffed bronze to achieve healthy-looking skin. Lips were kept in the same bronzed, caramel color family through Rare Beauty’s lip liner in shade Talented beneath a peach-hued lipstick in Humble, and a bit of gloss accentuated her pout.
Furthering Gomez’s chic makeup moment was a voluminous side-swept bun crafted by hairstylist Marissa Marino. There was nary a hair out of place, thanks to Moroccanoil stylers. “We wanted something up and sleek to complement the high neckline on her white Celine gown while still having some volume in the front for a retro feel,” says Marino of their inspiration. Celebrity makeup artist Tom Bachik accompanied Gomez’s emerald green accents with a matching jewel-toned mani achieved through a custom cocktail of OPI shades.
Overall, Gomez’s look was a stunning reflection of the natural ease she channels into Rare Beauty as a beauty brand, which allows anyone, anywhere, to elevate their makeup game seamlessly.
