Self-portraits in isolation

About the project

The sequence of photographs began during lockdown 2020 and in this period of solitude is when Shaheen decided to turn the camera onto herself, for the first time.

The self-portrait series can be characterised by its evocative use of colour and bold compositional arrangements that reveal clothing as sculptural adornment. Each image is a study of body, form, and the materiality of cloth; molding into sculptures of flesh and fabric.

Bio

Shaheen Peer is a self-taught photographer based in Pondicherry, India.

Her interest in photography began while she worked as a full-time fashion stylist and increasingly grew a likeness for the photographic medium during that time. She now creates characters, stages their narratives and explores India’s cultural landscape through both styling and photography.

The vibrant colour palette of her photographs can be attributed to the everyday sights of her upbringing in Madras- a city in India distinguished by its electrifying combination of colours and playful geometry.
