Over the past month, photographer Sinna Nasseri has embarked on a road trip through the heartland of America to capture the lives, concerns, and fears of a divided nation. Along the way, he documented the various ways in which families and individuals have responded to the moment—the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and, of course, the impending election—with piercing insight.

On the final leg of his journey, Nasseri traveled through a series of southern states to capture both the tension and cautious optimism of this time. Nasseri’s photos are an honest representation of the tensions of this time—one of his subjects, a 77-year-old woman with a car covered in Biden stickers, recounted her experience of being heckled and threatened while driving that morning—but together, they pay tribute to the irrepressible feeling of hope his subjects hold for a better future.

Below, follow Nasseri as he embarks on the final chapter of his American odyssey.

“A lot of people are now saying that ICE and ICE employees are racist. Well, we are not—all we do is follow the law. If some congressperson believes that we shouldn’t follow those laws then they should change them.”—Maria “Lupe” Dempsey, GOP county chair of Hudspeth County and retired federal agent, El Paso, TX

“The fact that you can run a car dealership or an insurance company does not make you the best candidate. The best candidate is someone who has actually been in the trenches, who has been listening and working directly with people and who can speak to their needs, but is also willing to take their criticisms and is willing to be held accountable. We’ve seen at every single level that we’re willing to look up to business leaders but not to community leaders.”—Verónica Carbajal, a candidate for mayor of El Paso, TX

“Maybe the Republican Party could have held on to the couple more generations that they had in them—but with the nomination of Donald Trump and everything that has ensued after his election, I think that they have signed the name on their own tombstone.…When you have people like Proud Boys aligning themselves with a party, that’s when you start seeing the death of a party.”—Fonzie, El Paso, TX
