The Vogue Runway numbers are in, and this season they tell a very clear story: There’s nothing like a designer debut to get the fashion world’s attention.

Hedi Slimane’s arrival at Celine (no accent aigu) was the most-seen collection of Spring 2019 by a wide margin. Everybody wanted to know how the elusive Slimane would handle his entrée at the house once occupied by the beloved Phoebe Philo. And everybody had an opinion, including about that dang accent aigu. Few designers elicit the kind of passionate responses that Slimane does, positive or negative. The kind of attention he’s received could disarm a less experienced name, but Slimane put a good spin on it: “At the end of the day, all of this is unexpected publicity,” he told filmmaker Loïc Prigent last week. “We didn’t expect as much.”

Second place goes to—what else?—Riccardo Tisci’s premier outing for Burberry. The former Givenchy creative director approached this launch collection with a sense of inclusivity and expansiveness—and a keen eye for the color beige—with a bar-raising 134 looks.

Neither Celine nor Burberry made it to the Vogue Runway Top 10 last season, which means major labels fell off, like Balenciaga and Valentino.
