I don’t know about you, but come summertime, the last thing I want to do on a sweltering hot day is fuss over a complicated outfit; I want to wear as little clothing as possible. Accessories, then, become an instant wardrobe hack—hero pieces for tricking others into thinking you’ve put in effort. Jewelry, in particular, has been my daily essential these past few months—specifically, the summer pearl necklace, which has become my surprising go-to.

No, these are not your grandma’s pearls: There’s a new crop of pearl necklace styles that are decidedly fun and fresh—cool, even. A classic strand of pearls has been a glamorous mainstay for decades; it’s a timeless and elegant look. But I’d hardly describe it as cutting-edge. Modern pearl necklaces are subverting the look, making the case that a pearlescent accessory can be less uptown chic and more downtown edgy.

Celebrities in pearls

Of course, it helps that a number of stylish celebrities have hopped on the trend. One Rihanna outfit in particular has remained burned into my memory: The star recently stepped out in mounds of pearl necklaces, piling them on top of a graphic tee, jeans, and a satin opera coat. Can you say cool? Even some fashionable gents have gotten in on the action too: Everyone from Barry Keoghan to Lewis Hamilton has been spotted wearing a subtle pearl necklace, with everything from streetwear to suits.

The styling consensus? First, look for unconventional styles. Taylor Swift, for instance, has been performing her Eras Tour this summer in a Vivienne Westwood pearl choker, complete with the brand’s signature orb pendant. (You want a pearl necklace with spice.) Rocking summer pearls also works best when you juxtapose them against more unexpected clothing pieces, à la Rihanna. Pearls with ripped jeans and a tee? Yes! It’s all about making them feel effortless and nonchalant—even if they’re luxurious freshwater pearls. Call it discreetly luxe.
