As a documented fan of Taylor Swift’s tailgating girl squad, you can imagine my joyful surprise at learning that over the weekend, she changed up her rotation a bit. On Sunday, Swift was spotted attending her fiancé Travis Kelce’s Chiefs game against the Houston Texans in the estimable company of two longtime pals: Selena Gomez and Lena Dunham. We love to see it!
While Swift’s friendship with Gomez dates back to their days of dating Jonas brothers (were we ever so young?), Dunham and Swift have been close since Twitter was still Twitter. Back in 2012, Dunham called Swift’s album Red “triumphant” on the app, adding: “If she’d been here when I was in college I would have written papers on her, not Sylvia Plath.” Swift then responded to Dunham with some plaudits of her own, tweeting: “you made my day with that. I’m now going to sit in my dressing room reciting my fav @girlsHBO quotes.. Which is all of them.”
I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s rabidly eagler to know if Gomez and Dunham will join Swift at Super Bowl LX (if, indeed, the Chiefs make it there, as they did last year). But then again, Swift isn’t exactly short on football-enjoying friends to camp out fieldside with. Maybe Blake Lively will be there! Maybe Ice Spice and/or the Haim sisters will make repeat appearances!
Personally, I’m rooting for Dunham to show up again, if only for the resulting scene in her next semi-autobiographical series in which a “regular girl” becomes BFFs with an internationally famous pop star and her NFL tight-end hubby-to-be. I can see it now!
