The Preppy and Practical Tennis Skort Is the Bike Short of Summer 2019

Here’s an item of clothing Vogue hasn’t written about (or talked about) in a while: the skort. For this writer, it instantly conjures the black cross-over Zara skort everyone was wearing back in 2012—one that I loved so much, I bought it two sizes too big. Others might remember the denim skorts they wore as a kid, and if you’re a tennis fan, the traditional Spandex tennis skort no doubt comes to mind. With the French Open coming to a close tomorrow in Paris—Ashleigh Barty and Marketa Vondrousova will compete in the women’s final—the look is feeling particularly fresh. Consider it a more elegant alternative to leggings or the now-ubiquitous bike short—and breezier, too, now that summer is really heating up in New York.

To wit, Vogue editor Anny Choi—who admits she’s never played tennis in her life—wore a stretchy Lululemon tennis skort earlier this month for a trip to the Catskills. “I picked one up after seeing our colleague Amanda Brooks wearing hers,” she explains. “We were going on a trip upstate, and she just looked so casual yet comfortable and cool for the long drive. I wore my white one with a pair of New Balance sneakers and a Thom Browne zip-up hoodie to play up the sporty look.”

Even more compelling is the idea of wearing a skort in a decidedly un-sporty way. Choi went on something of a “skort binge,” picking up a simple black skort at Lululemon and an office-friendly version from Maje. “I’ll wear it with an oversize sweater and a pair of simple flats for that preppy, post-tennis look,” she says. “A skort is also perfect for running errands on weekends without worrying about accidentally flashing someone. I think it’s the new bike short of the summer. I’m dying to find a chic, pleated skort that I can wear with a button-down, too.”
