How does sound travel? No matter whether she’s headed out for three days or three weeks, Eleanor Friedberger grabs her guitars and fills up the same tried-and-true compact wheelie carry-on. Sophia Knapp, who blames her meticulous nature on the stars (she has Virgo rising), organizes everything, including her tasseled tambourine, in easy-to-locate mesh bags. Meanwhile, Dawn Richard places such meaning in her material world, from tech gear to Givenchy, that she affectionately calls her suitcase (the main one, anyway) by pronoun: “Oh, she’s a big girl!” Performing onstage night after night is one thing, but packing for a month of life in a tour bus or hopping planes, time zones, and temperatures, can be a daunting task in its own right. Getting a close look at the whole process is tantamount to an object lesson in style. After the first rush of music-festival season, we caught up with three distinctive touring musicians for a midsummer portrait of the artist: Friedberger at home in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint; Richard at a Los Angeles hotel; and Knapp, just moving back to her native Los Angeles, at her childhood house-under-renovation.
