Hot girl summer? Troye Sivan has been having a hot pop-star summer. Following the release of his latest single, “Rush”—which quickly became a fixture in all of the gay clubs—Sivan has been building hype around the October release of his new album, Something to Give Each Other. But if that wasn’t enough, Sivan is also busy starting a lifestyle brand. This week, Sivan launched Tsu Lange Yor, a new line of fragrances and decorative objects for the home. “I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of ‘home’, which became stronger when I started to travel at 17,” Sivan tells Vogue. “Creating a warm, safe and expressive space that I can immerse myself in and share with people I love became a dream and passion of mine. Tsu Lange Yor is an extension of all of those ideas.”
Sivan’s interest in the realm of home design isn’t surprising, especially if you’ve seen his Architectural Digest home tour. “My love for interiors and architecture really started in L.A. and Palm Springs,” says Sivan. “These gorgeous mid-century homes owned by fabulous and meticulous queer people. My discovery then continued into my travels.” With his new line—which includes three eau de parfums, three home fragrances (candles and oils), and two decorative objects (an oil burner and a dreidel)—Sivan wanted to create products “that could help people slow down, treat and express themselves, and feel present in their space that they love,” he says.
With Tsu Lange Yor’s three eau de parfums, Sivan experimented with scents that range from smoky to fruity. The Signature, made in collaboration with perfumer Craig Andrade, includes warm notes of dry spice, woods, musk, and green; the Luca has aromas of woods, amber, spice, and young citrus; The Pool smells of berry, fruits, summer, and green. “The process of making the fragrances was maybe my favorite part of the whole experience, and also the most challenging,” says Sivan. “We used a lot of Australian sandalwood, cedar wood, and even created the first fragrance to use an ingredient called Tasmanian Mountain Pepper.” Sivan also wanted them to be universally appealing. “I imagine the scents being worn by anyone, regardless of gender or age,” says Sivan. “Luca, for example, is so hot to me when I imagine anyone wearing it. Sexy is sexy.”
The three candle and oil scents also include the Signature scent, Pool scent, and a new Sassafras scent featuring notes of woods, smoke, warm spice, and leather. “I think a home fragrance should evoke comfort and create a welcoming atmosphere,” says Sivan of the ideal home fragrance. “Our scent Sassafras is perfect for a winter night, smelling like wood fire, smoke and leather, while Pool is perfect for having all the windows open on a spring or summer day with notes of tomato leaf, coriander, and cucumber. I wanted them all to create a sense of calm and quiet.”
When it came to creating his decorative objects, Sivan had fun experimenting within the realm of interior design. “On the oil burners, we collaborated with one of my favorite Australian artists, Joel Adler,” says Sivan. “He works beautifully with metals to create these fluid, soft, organic shapes. We worked in virtual reality remotely, which was actually a pleasure. I would place the oil burner on my table to scale in VR, and could move around and feel the design before it existed.” The end result is a functional piece that makes a serious statement (a tea light candle warms the oil burner, and then diffuses the scent into the space). “I wanted to create something beautiful that could sit on any coffee table, credenza, or bedside and look gorgeous— unlit, or lit,” says Sivan.
As the brand continues to grow, you can expect to see even more launches. But for now, he is taking things one step at a time. “I see Tsu Lange Yor and my role as creative director to be the most fluid thing, and that’s kind of the point,” says Sivan. “I’m so grateful for the platform to keep collaborating with people I love, exploring, and sharing. I can’t wait to see what we’re making in five years.”
