The Valentino fall 2022 collection, unveiled by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli in Paris’s Carreau du Temple on Sunday, served as a reminder of the importance of contemplation, and the profound impact that color can have on the senses.
Except for a selection of all-black looks, the collection was, like the runway, entirely pink—the color of “love, community, energy and freedom,” in Piccioli’s words. Once guests’ eyes adjusted to the hypnotic shade christened “Pink PP”—which will be recognized by the Pantone Color Institute—they could focus their attention on the details: from the expressions on models’ faces, to the detail on dresses, to the complementary hot-pink makeup.
Inspired by the “freedom, individuality, curiosity and invention of pink,” legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath painted eyes that were “defined and structured in vibrancy,” using bold pink pigments “pressed and blended to perfection.” To further make the pink pop, McGrath conjured her signature “sublime skin” look, ensuring each model’s complexion was hydrated and luminous. In order to keep focus on the eyes, lips were left simple: “A silhouette of natural brilliance.”
Hairstylist Guido was inspired by Piccioli’s direction to make models “more boyish than sexy, tougher.” “We didn’t have any precise references when it came to beauty—Pierpaolo just wanted hair to have a feeling to go with the clothes,” he says. “L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Volume Lift Spray Mousse has a lot of shine in it, so I put it in the hair and let it dry naturally. It gave hair a wet look with some hold. At the end I put Color Wow Extra Mist-ical Super Shine on top.” In order to retain a sense of each model’s personality, Guido tailored hairstyles to the girls’ existing look, enhancing what was already there.
