Who’s Afraid of the Minotaur?

Digital artists are dreaming up fantastic hybrid creatures monsters and deities alike - that bring together the kingdom of man with that of his antagonists, celebrating a whole new unbreakable bond.

The man/animal hybrid has been a universal theme throughout history, from Egyptian and Assyrian cultures all the way to nineteenth-century European folklore. Sometimes the creatures dreamt up are monsters, sometimes deities, but they always symbolize the fundamental contrasts of humanity: between humans and nature or reason and instinct. Man has always mistakenly believed he had a special place in the universe, convinced he was both connected and separate. Today, this belief has been called into question due to greater environmental awareness, highlighting just how much nature’s prosperity is necessary for all of humanity to survive. Whether they represent the subconscious or inhabit post-apocalyptic worlds, creations by contemporary artists in the digital realm no longer show that hybridization as an endless battle; it’s more a whole new respect for nature.

«This piece was inspired by the idea of a Post Civilization Society. Envisioning an evolution of humans whom have adopted physical elements from the animal kingdom in their path of survival. This figure roams through the deserted ruins of a lost world. With her, she carries an artifact - a 2019 Louis Vuitton Prisme Keepall.»

«I  express ideas and reflections through images. With this, I tried to take on opposite concepts: insect/woman, attraction/repulsion, strength/fragility. I wanted to bring to life a series of ambiguous visual works where beauty - and, therefore, our acceptance of the image - comes from the flexible equilibrium that manages to take shape. The series, which has 15 large hybrid beings, continues to grow.»

«This was an inspiration after meeting a baby lamb in an animal sanctuary and I wanted to highlight how baby lambs are extremely playful and wanted to compare that to human like child play as in these animals are very friendly and have very similar emotions to us and can feel love, joy and pain. Animals are huge part of my life as a plant based vegan I love all animals but I think rescued farm animals are by far my faviroute because of how peaceful they are.»

«My work addresses the question of a post-human identity, inspired by trans-human ideology and NBIC technologies. The human face becomes the object of a transformation between the beautiful and the ugly, between the biological and the synthetic. The image of the hybrid being for me embodies all the changes of our time.»

«I am fascinated by the archetypal symbolism of animals and using these semantics to tap into the deeper psyche. In this piece I am reference the zodiac Aries with the rams horns, I made this piece whilst the moon was in Aries from 20-22 of April in 2020. The sign Aries is associate with courage which i juxtaposed with the clown collar, the underlying message of the image is dare to be the fool.»
