The BAFTAs have a reputation for being unpredictable. While ahead of the SAG Awards and the Oscars, awards season prognosticators (myself included) generally have an idea of which way the wind is blowing, at the always slightly eccentric British Academy Film Awards, literally anything could happen. Lest we forget, this was the event where, just last year, Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front scooped both the best-film and best-director prizes over Everything Everywhere All at Once, and where Austin Butler, Cate Blanchett, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon took home acting prizes instead of Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. (And that’s not even mentioning that moment when Ariana DeBose did the thing.) Yes, British and Irish performers and projects have a certain advantage here, and the final outcomes don’t always have a transformative impact on the Oscar race—but the results are still fascinating to watch nonetheless.
