After honing her writing and producing skills on High Fidelity, Zoë Kravitz is ready to make the leap to directing with her next film: Blink Twice (previously titled Pussy Island), which will hit theaters on August 23, and stars Channing Tatum as Slater King, a billionaire tech mogul.
Described as a genre thriller, Kravitz’s feature directorial debut will follow a cocktail waitress in Los Angeles named Frida (Naomi Ackie) who catches King’s eye at a fundraising gala and is swiftly invited to join him and his friends on a dreamy holiday on his private island. “It’s paradise,” reads the log line. “Wild nights blend into sun-soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.” On April 23, the first trailer dropped—and it’s as unsettling as you would expect. It also features a first look at the film’s starry supporting cast, which includes Alia Shawkat, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Geena Davis, and Kyle MacLachlan.
“I started writing this story in 2017,” Kravitz told Deadline in 2021, of the script she has co-authored with E.T. Feigenbaum. “As a woman in general, and a woman in this industry, I’ve experienced some pretty wild behavior from the opposite sex. The [original] title [of the film] was kind of a joke at first, this place where people would go, bring women, party, and hang out. The story evolved into something else, but the title wound up having multiple meanings. And it alludes to this time and place we claim to not be in anymore, in terms of sexual politics. People are evolving and changing but there is still a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths from past behavior.” Amen. We can’t wait to see what Kravitz has come up with.
