Zoey Deutch is modest about her beauty prowess: “I want to preface [this video] by saying that I don’t actually know anything; I just know that this is what works for me,” she says. But after hours in the makeup chair for recent projects, including Netflix hit The Politician and Zombieland: Double Tap, she’s certainly picked up a few tricks. On this particular morning in New York, Deutch has just wrapped her latest project, giving her the fortunate opportunity to sleep a full nine hours the night before. “This is a particularly de-puffing skincare routine, because I’m v v puffy from sleeping too much,” she notes.

The 25-year-old starts by running two icy massage tools over her complexion to take down inflammation. Deutch is transparent about the skin issues and resulting self-consciousness she’s dealt with over the years. “I’ve had hormonal acne since I was like 15,” she explains, “but it got really bad in my 20s.” Her routine is calibrated accordingly: To prep her skin, Deutch washes her face with a gel cleanser and swipes an antibiotic wipe over her complexion to ensure no trace of makeup is left behind. Then two moisturizers come into play. From her cheekbones up, she applies La Mer’s cult soft cream to the top part of her face, and Elta MD’s lighter formula to the lower half. After adding eye cream, the actor smoothes everything in using a vibrating lifting tool. “It is awesome,” she says.

Makeup begins with a light base of foundation and a dab of concealer under her eyes. “This is the part where I’m going to decide what kind of eye I’m going to do,” she says, while picking up her favorite discontinued Maybelline palette, which she first started using at age 12. “I like pinks and peachy situations,” she explains while creating a wash of rosy shadow across her lids.

Next, lashes are lifted with a swipe of mascara, and lips defined with a peony-hued pencil. “Looking more like a human!” she coos while swiping “the most important blush of all time”—Chanel’s Golden Sun—over her cheekbones. And for the pièce de résistance, Deutch employs a surprising lipstick hack, dotting a liquid lipstick on her cheeks and nose for an extra final flush.
